Nicolas Maduro vs Plateforme X
Amidst rising tensions in Venezuela, President Nicolas Maduro has suspended Platform X (formerly Twitter) for ten days following his accusations against the social network’s CEO, Elon Musk, for „violating all network rules by inciting hatred and fascism“.
Power Retention Amidst Turmoil
Despite these accusations and a disputed re-election, Maduro appeared before the Supreme Court, which he himself had petitioned to affirm his continuation in power.
He faces an opposition claiming rigged elections, with evidence suggesting that Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, successor to Maria Corina Machado, won with 67% of the vote.
International Pressure
The local situation has garnered international attention, with countries like Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico urging Venezuelan authorities to release the minutes from the controversial presidential election.
Meanwhile, Washington continues its sanctions against Venezuela, warning that „arresting opposition leaders could further mobilize the international community“.
Deadly Consequences
The struggle for power has proven deadly. Human rights organizations report 24 deaths following the announcement of Maduro’s victory. Opposition leaders have not been spared, with prominent figures Williams Davila and Américo De Grazia being detained, marking an escalation in repression.
